Add launch parameters to force settings before launch. Click and drag hl.exe into command prompt, and add “-game bshift -window -w 1280 -h 720” after the path, then press enter. That should launch it in a 1280x720 window. There you’ll be able to change the settings through the game.

In options, load the GoldSrc Engine preset. Go back to the Current window tab. Half Life setup. Open the Half Life directory by right-clicking Half Life in Steam -> Properties -> Local files -> Browse game files… Launch hl.exe as many times as you need. GoldSrc Engine games will usually not let you launch more than one instance.

Open your Steam Library, and search for " Half-Life 2 ", then click it to enter the game's page, but don't start it yet. Now your Steam Window should look like this. Now open the Game's Properties. You can do that by clicking the Gear, then clicking on Properties. Below there is a picture that will tell you where those buttons are located.
Half Life only has 2 display modes, OpenGL and Software. You of course want OpenGL and you don't need launch options to do that it's in the options menu in the video tab of the in-game options. If you've used launch options delete them, launch the game, and click Options then go in to the Video tab. It's there.
