In general extenders are a poor idea. You give a lot to get little. There are a few "L" lenses that tolerate an extender fairly well. Most lenses don't. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens and the Canon Extender EF 1.4X II work well together. I have this combo so I can recommend it. It also works well with the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USMIf you use the same lens with a 2x Extender, it becomes a 140-400mm f/5.6 lens. In the same way, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM lens has a maximum aperture of f/4, but with a 1.4x Extender, the effective maximum aperture becomes f/5.6, while with a 2x Extender it becomes f/8.

Better magnification will be found with the Canon 500D Close-up lens or with an extender. The 200 f/2.8L II is compatible with both the Canon Extender 1.4x and the Canon Extender 2x. All Canon EOS bodies retain AF functionality with even the 2x attached to this lens. Performance with the 1.4x attached is very good.
